When selecting tiles for residential or commercial projects, architects rely on precise industrial standards to ensure safety and longevity. The most critical of these metrics is the slip resistance rating, commonly known as the P-Rating (Pendulum Test Value). Understanding this scale is non-negotiable for creating spaces that are as safe as they are breathtaking.
The P-Rating Scale Explained
Measured using a pendulum friction tester to simulate a wet shoe heel slipping on a surface.
Smooth and polished surfaces. Perfect for dry indoor areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, and internal hallways where water spillage is unlikely.
The most versatile rating. Matte finish tiles ideal for transitional spaces, residential kitchens, bathroom floors (dry zones), and covered alfresco areas.
The Outdoor & Wet Area Standard. Features a textured or grip surface. Mandatory for external walkways, pool surrounds, uncovered balconies, and commercial kitchens where water is frequently present.
Extremely textured surfaces. Reserved for high-risk industrial applications, steep ramps, and specific commercial requirements. Rarely used in residential design due to maintenance difficulty.

Durability: The PEI Rating
While P-Ratings govern safety, the Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) rating dictates durability. It measures a glazed tile's resistance to abrasion and surface wear.

The Specification Golden Rule
Specifying a tile with too low a P-Rating for a wet area poses a severe liability and safety risk. Conversely, specifying a P5 tile for a residential bathroom will create a surface that catches dirt and is nearly impossible to mop clean.
